Information for PD delegates

School principals can nominate a staff member known as a Professional Development delegate (PD delegate) to help plan, monitor and validate PD for staff undergoing accreditation.

How to become a PD delegate

To become a PD delegate, your school principal must provide written authority to the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES).

Helping teachers plan their PD

PD delegates can help teachers maintain their accreditation at all levels by helping them plan PD, and making sure that the PD run at school supports their plans. It is important that Teacher Identified PD (relevant training courses, workshops, and seminars etc) which are not registered with BOSTES is part of the plan.

  • Teachers need to be given opportunities to plan their professional learning by using the Standards to identify their learning needs and plan their learning activities.
  • Plans should encompass short-term and long-term goals and incorporate individual teacher learning needs and school and system priorities.

Running PD at school

PD run at school can contribute to Teacher Identified PD or a school can choose to run a PD course delivered by a BOSTES Registered PD provider.

Finding approved PD courses

To support teachers, and help with accreditation, BOSTES endorses training providers who run courses that are in line with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.  To review a list of endorsed courses:

  1. Log into the online account tool.
  2. Go to Delegates > Courses Lookup

Validating PD

PD delegates need to make sure that any Teacher Identified PD has been validated through the online account tool. This includes PD organised by the school, or examples of teachers choosing to reflect on their teaching practice, plan their professional learning, observe a colleague’s lesson or attend an interesting talk or seminar, for example at a Museum or Art Gallery.

What does validating PD mean?

When a teacher completes any PD (BOSTES Registered and Teacher Identified) it must be recorded and validated on the online account tool. Course providers validate BOSTES Registered PD (PD delivered by endorsed training providers), and TAAs, principals or PD delegates validate Teacher Identified PD.

How do PD delegates validate PD?

You need to log into the online account tool. Click on the ‘Delegate’ tab. You will be given options from this point. NB: It is important the teacher you are validating has up-to-date account details that link to your school – otherwise their name will not be listed.

What else do PD delegates need to know about validating Proficient Teacher Accreditation?

Teachers who have been accredited at Proficient Teacher level need to participate in 50 hours of BOSTES Registered PD and 50 hours of Teacher Identified PD over a 5 year period if full time, or 7 years if casual or part-time.

Teachers are also able to have any further undergraduate study or postgraduate study undertaken during their maintenance of accreditation period recognised by BOSTES. Teachers need to apply to BOSTES of Teachers to have this study recognised.
