The Institute was established to support quality teaching in all NSW schools. Its charter is to advance the status and standing of the teaching profession.

The Institute works to support the career-long development of teachers and to assure both the profession and the community of the quality of teacher education programs.

If you are commencing teaching in NSW or are returning to teaching in NSW after an absence of 5 years or more, you will need to be accredited. 

Accreditation attests that a teacher has met the  Professional Teaching Standards for one of the key stages. The accreditation decision is made by a Teacher Accreditation Authority (TAA). All accreditation decisions are recorded by the NSW Institute of Teachers.
