Who is eligible for accreditation to teach?

a) Provisional Accreditation

A Graduate Teacher eligible to be provisionally accredited has successfully completed:

  • a program approved by the Institute of Teachers, at a university or other approved higher education institution in New South Wales (NSW), or a similar award (predating current requirements) conferred by a NSW tertiary institution approved by the Minister. See  Approved Programs .
  • OR a teacher education qualification from a higher education institution within Australia - see Interstate Teachers
  • OR a teacher education qualification from a higher education institution outside Australia that is recognised within the guidelines of the Australian Government National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR), and that meets the Institute requirements set out below – see Overseas Trained Teachers.

b) Conditional Accreditation

A conditionally accredited teacher does not meet the requirements above and is required to undertake further teacher education. A person who has a degree in an area that is relevant to the area in which the person is or is to be employed to teach may be employed by a teacher accreditation authority ON CONDITION THAT:

  • EITHER they are completing the fourth year of an initial teacher education degree,
  • OR they have finished a relevant degree and are enrolled or will enrol in a graduate entry teacher education qualification (eg Graduate Diploma of Education, Bachelor of Teaching, Master of Teaching) at a recognised teacher education institution.
