Overseas-Trained Teachers

Overview

This site provides information on the recognition and proof of overseas qualifications for people wishing to be eligible for accreditation to teach in New South Wales schools.

How can I have my qualifications recognised?

1.      For non-Australians with overseas teacher education qualifications residing overseas:

Teaching Australia is the authority designated by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to conduct skills assessments for the General Skilled Migration Programme for pre-primary, primary and secondary school teaching. Teaching Australia only conducts assessments for migration purposes. Teaching Australia is responsible for a comparability assessment of overseas qualifications for persons residing overseas. http://www.teachingaustralia.edu.au/ta/go/home/pid/418

Further assessment of your qualifications is required, to be eligible for accreditation to teach in NSW.

An assessment of your qualifications, based on the requirements of the NSW Institute of Teachers, is undertaken (at this stage) by the employer of your choice. Click here to see a list of major employers of teachers in New South Wales.

2.     For non-Australian potential teachersresiding in Australia with overseas teacher education qualifications with a working visa or teacher exchange arrangement, contact an employing authority.

What proof of qualifications do I need?

When applying for teaching positions, employment and accreditation, certified copies of all official documents (for example, birth certificates, passports and official academic transcripts) must be included with the application.

If you have studied overseas, all official transcripts and other relevant documents must be translated into English, by a recognised interpreting and translating service, such as the Community Relations Commission (CRC) NSW. You may wish to contact the CRC at their website, here.

What level of English language is required to be eligible to be accredited to teach in a NSW school?

For teaching in all NSW schools the Professional Teaching Standards specifically require English communication skills.

Refer to the Institute’s Policy for English Language Testing of New Scheme Teachers for Provisional and Conditional Accreditation
