NSW legislation requires that all people teaching in NSW for the first time after 30 September 2004, or returning to teaching in NSW after an absence of five years or more, must be accredited.
If you are from interstate and wish to teach in NSW you are first required to be accredited at the point of employment by a teacher accreditation authority. The teacher accreditation authority is usually the school or school system offering employment.
The Institute cannot recognise your interstate registration until you are accredited at the point of employment.
Following this process, you will be required to meet the Standards for Professional Competence. If you are have a current Full Registration from another Australian state or territory* the Institute will recognise this registration and, following verification from the relevant registration authority, update your accreditation status to Professional Competence.
Please read the information below and follow the instructions that apply to you:
-
if you are intending to work for the NSW Department of Education and Training please forward a certified copy of your current interstate registration at the time of applying to the Institute for your Statement of Eligibility
-
if you are intending to work in a non-government school, you'll need to complete an online application for accreditation
, and then forward a certified copy of your current interstate registration to the Institute
-
if you are coming to NSW from Queensland or Western Australia, you will also need to provide the Institute with a statement authorising the relevant registration authority to release your information to the Institute. A proforma to complete the statement is available here (QLD) and here (WA).
-
if you are already provisionally accredited in NSW, forward a certified copy of your current interstate registration to the NSW Institute Teachers so your status can be updated
-
If you are a teacher who lives in a border area and teaches in both states you will be required to meet the maintenance of registration/accreditation requirements in the state in which you live
-
If you are not resident in NSW and not working full-time in NSW, you do not have to pay NSW accreditation fees as long as the NSW Institute is provided with proof of your ongoing registration with an interstate body.
More information about the maintenance of accreditation requirements can be found here.
For further enquiries regarding interstate recognition please contact Lyn Foskett on 9268 6385 or Chandra Fernando on 9268 6386.
*except South Australia. The Institute is currently finalising a policy to recognise Fully Registered teachers coming to NSW from South Australia.
