Meeting Update:
Requirements for admission to a teacher education programs
The Institute provided advice to UAC on requirements for admission to undergraduate and graduate entry initial teacher education programs.
The Institute sought advice from the Office of the Board of Studies in relation to HSC English and Mathematics Band 4 equivalences in Queensland and Victoria. This information is available in the ITEC Newsletter distributed to TEIs in July 2008.
Subject Content Requirements – clarification of Secondary second teaching area
The Graduate Teacher Standards 1.1.1-1.1.3 Subject Content Requirements for teaching in a secondary school describes explicit requirements for a first teaching area (six semester units with four units at level 2 or above with subject content stipulations).
The second designated area requires four semester units with two units at level 2 or above. TEI staff has sought additional advice from the Institute particularly in the subject areas of science, PDHPE, Music and Visual Arts. ITEC supported descriptions for secondary designated areas. This advice is published on the Institute website and has been forwarded to TEIs to ensure consistency in advice to students.
Sustainability Education
Staff from the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change presented information on sustainability education in relation to initial teacher education programs meeting Graduate Teacher Standards.
Assessment of ITE programs
The Institute received a large number of initial teacher education program submissions in May and is proceeding to establish ITEC panels of teachers, teacher educators and curriculum experts to help assess them.
