Quality Teaching Council

The Quality Teaching Council will be the Institute’s primary source of advice on educational and professional matters. The Council will advise on such matters as professional teaching standards, accreditation policy and processes, endorsement of initial teacher education courses and programs, approval of professional development providers and the registration of professional development courses.

The Council will consist of 21 members, comprising the Institute's Chair, 10 elected members and 10 members appointed by the Minister. The membership of the council is further defined below:

The Council will consist of the following members:

(1) the Chairperson of the Institute.

(2) 10 elected teachers comprising:

• Five government school teachers, at least two of whom are to be rural teachers
• One government primary school principal
• One government secondary school principal
• One catholic systemic school teacher
• One catholic systemic school principal
• One of either an Independent school teacher or principal.

(3) 10 people appointed by the Minister including:

1. a nominee of the NSW Teachers Federation,
2. a nominee of the NSW/ACT Independent Education Union,
3. a nominee of the Board of Studies,
4. a nominee of the Director-General of Education and Training,
5. a nominee of the Catholic Education Commission, NSW,
6. a nominee of the Association of Independent Schools of NSW,
7. a person who, in the opinion of the Minister, represents the interests of parents of school-age children,
8. a nominee of the NSW Teacher Education Council,
9. two persons representing the interests of teachers, with at least one such person being a member of the Professional Teachers' Council NSW.
