Minister Announces Quality Teaching Council Electoral Roll

20 Jul 2005

The NSW Minister for Education and Training, Ms Carmel Tebbutt, today announced the opening of the electoral rolls for the first ever Quality Teaching Council.

Around 90,000 teachers from across the school spectrum are entitled to enrol and have their say in the election of 10 members to the new Quality Teaching Council. The election will be held in the last quarter of this year.

"This is an opportunity for every teacher to have a say in the future of their profession," Ms Tebbutt said today.

"The Quality Teaching Council will bring together teachers from across the school system and guide the development of the teaching profession.

"The Council will be responsible for delivering advice to the Institute on all professional matters, ensuring the highest standards in NSW schools."

The Quality Teaching Council will be made up of 21 members, including the Chair of the Institute, Dr Jim McMorrow.

The Minister will appoint 10 members, and the profession will vote for the remaining 10. The ten will comprise:

  • five teachers from government schools
  • a principal of a government primary school
  • a principal of a government secondary school
  • a teacher from a Catholic systemic school
  • a principal for a Catholic systemic school
  • a teacher or principal from an independent school

At least two of the government school teachers must be from rural or regional NSW. Rolls close at 5pm on 3 August 2005.

"It's voluntary to put your name on the roll and to vote," Ms Tebbutt said.

"I urge all those eligible to get behind this important initiative which reaffirms the high standing of teachers in NSW."
