Initial Teacher Education - Expressions of Interest from Classroom and Executive Teachers

The NSW Institute of Teachers is working with teacher educators and the profession as a whole to establish expectations for graduate teachers as identified in the Professional Teaching Standards.
The Institute seeks applications from interested classroom and executive teachers with appropriate experience and expertise to be placed on an eligibility list, to:
(i) become a member of the Initial Teacher Education Committee (ITEC). The committee will carry responsibility on behalf of the Quality Teaching Council to advise on initial teacher education programs generally.
(ii) participate on ITE Panels to work with universities and other tertiary providers and advise on particular initial teacher education programs, commencing July/August 2006. Each panel most likely will include a practising teacher and an executive teacher, experts in initial teacher education, a curriculum specialist, and the Manager ITE as executive officer. Appropriately skilled and qualified teachers will receive training as panel members.
(iii) participate in ITE Working Parties, at one/two meetings in June/July 2006 (some may be ongoing), to develop guiding documentation relating to aspects of the Graduate Teacher Standards in the following areas:

professional experience (practicum/internship) requirements

special education
-
use of ICT in teaching
-
teaching students with challenging behaviours/classroom management
-
literacy across the curriculum, and literacy needs of specific groups
-
teaching Aboriginal students, and about Aboriginal Australia
-
teaching NESB students

BROAD CRITERIA

Recent successful classroom experience

In-depth subject knowledge and knowledge of pedagogy

Experience working with a Teacher Education Institution and pre-service teachers; for example, in professional experience (practicum/internship), a teacher education program, a university program/course advisory committee, or in research/studies of initial teacher education

Recent experience in supporting and mentoring other teachers, particularly with regard to beginning teachers
-
Classroom teachers’ relief cost will be provided. Applicants should discuss their expression of interest with their Principal before application.
