Becoming accredited

Phase 1 – Preliminary Application

  • You undertake a preliminary application designed to assess your likelihood of success.
  • If successful you proceed with your application.
  • You discuss your application with your school principal or line manager (if you are a principal)
  • Your school principal or line manager sends an acknowledgement to the Institute that a discussion has taken place.

Phase 2 – Completing the Accreditation Submission

  • You start to collect evidence for accreditation.
  • Your evidence comes from three sources: documentary evidence; referee evidence from colleagues, supervisors and teachers who you have supervised; and external observations.
  • All your evidence is stored electronically on the Institute’s website.
  • The Institute will recruit, train and manage external observers.
  • When ready, you submit your application for accreditation to the TAA A/L.

Phase 3 – Making the accreditation decision

  • Your TAA A/L considers each application to ensure consistency with others in the same TAA.
  • Your TAA A/L makes recommendation and sends application to the Moderating and Consistency Committee (MCC).
  • MCC considers a range of applications for accreditation from across all schools and school sectors.
  • MCC gives advice back to your TAA
  • TAA A/L considers the MCCs advice and makes the final accreditation decision.
  • If successful, you are awarded accreditation status by the Institute of Teachers and the TAA A/L.
