You need to be accredited with the NSW Institute of Teachers in order to teach in one of the three school sectors in NSW:
- Government / DET
- Catholic (referred to in the online form as Catholic Systemic)
- Independent (referred to in the online form as Other Schools)
Who will accredit me?
Accreditation of teachers is undertaken by Teacher Accreditation Authorities (TAAs). TAAs are generally teacher employers.
The Minister For Education and Training authorises teacher employers to act as Teacher Accreditation Authorities (TAAs) for the accreditation of teachers.
What role does the Institute of Teachers have in the accreditation of teachers?
The Institute of Teachers oversees a system of accreditation and recognition of a teacher's professional capacity against the Professional Teacher Standards. It is also responsible for monitoring the quality of these decisions across all schools in NSW. See also Fees.
What should I do first?
Teachers seeking initial accreditation in non-government schools should approach their employer or prospective employer prior to accessing the online system. The employer, that is the Teacher Accreditation Authority, should provide an indication (verbal) that they are willing to employ you, subject to you meeting their requirements for employment and the Institute’s accreditation requirements.
NOTE:
Do not complete the online accreditation form unless the Teacher Accreditation Authority has agreed to consider your application.
Do I need to submit an application for accreditation with each employer?
Regardless of how many different schools or Teacher Accreditation Authorities you are applying to (including the Department of Education and Training), you only need to apply for accreditation with the NSW Institute of Teachers once.
Accreditation in another State or Territory
If you are already accredited in another State or Territory you will still need to apply for accreditation with us. You may then be able to apply for Mutual Recognition. See Interstate Teachers for details.
Teaching in Government Schools
If you are applying to work in a NSW Government school (Department of Education and Training) you will need to complete the Institute's application for eligibility to teach. This can be done in My Account and it enables an assessment of your qualifications to teach. As you are applying to work in a NSW Government school, please tick 'no' for the question at Section 2, and ignore sections 3, 4B and 7C.
Teaching in Catholic and Independent (Non-Government) Schools
Teachers wishing to work in non-government schools may complete an online application for accreditation directly with the NSW Institute of Teachers. This can be done in My Account.
If you are unable to complete the form online, please download either Form A or Form B (below), complete as necessary, and submit to your Teacher Accreditation Authority for sign-off.
IMPORTANT:
Applications submitted on paper are subject to a lengthier process than those completed online. It may take several weeks before your form is processed. If you do choose to apply using a paper form, please ensure that all relevant supporting documentation is provided.
Form A - If you are new to teaching in NSW
Form B - If you are returning to teaching in NSW after an absence of 5 years or more
Transition Scheme Teachers
Transition scheme teacher applications may not be completed online. Please ring 1300 739 338 to enquire about your teaching status under the NSW Institute of Teachers Act 2004.
